Water tastes like a tenth of vodka.
OK so at one point of you chemo journey, some foods and odours will just put you off COMPLETELY. For me, coffee breath and hospital smells were so pungent! I also couldn't go near carrots or papayas on my cycle - WEIRD I know.
EVERYONE REACTS DIFFERENTLY
PRIOR TO CHEMO
Ok, so pre much before chemo I had the biggest appetite. Like legit, I was a HUGE foodie (still am) but like my stomach was known to be ENDLESSSS. I was especially known for my sweet tooth and was a notorious chocaholic.
Although I loved junk, I also loved weird healthy foods, like organic, raw, vegan stuff - SOLD. So yea, I guess you could say I had a "balanced" diet LOL. Legit though, I ate and loved my veggies and fruits... like to the point that I could probably be vegetarian. I ate meat...not much though BUT don't get me wrong, a nice gourmet burger, steak, peking duck wrap or ribs would get me going, but like, I always ate a lot of veggies (to the point where I've always been iron deficient LOL)
DURING-CHEMO
In my first cycle I was still able to eat chocolate for some reason LOL but OTHER THAN THAT... my sweet tooth goes away during my chemo cycle and the few days after, as does my appetite. During this, I sorta feel a bit shit because I love eating, so it's a bit of a bummer when your tongue just constantly tastes weird EVEN WHEN YOU AREN'T EATING. The bright side is that you lose like a kilo but then LOL when the appetite returns, this becomes irrelevant BAHAHA
When the taste-buds do return, overall, I have more of a savoury then sweet tooth WHICH IS SO WEIRD TO ME - like I'd now prefer steak/ribs/chips over a CAKE. Which would have NEVER been the case prior to chemo. But yea, I just want things that are like highly flavoured and salty, but hey, getting that protein amirite (low key getting high cholesterol too, but like whatevs, let's not think about that LOL)
Don't get me wrong though, my sweet tooth still exists on some days though!
Maybe permanent change??? I DEFS CAN NOT EAT BITTER STUFF ANYMORE - I think this is mainly because the steroids I eat during my cycle (prednisone) SUCKS ASS. My tongue legit feels weird and I get chills even thinking about it. They are the most bitter, small little demons that will traumatise you for life YUCK.
POST-CHEMO
Yet to be experienced BUT WILL BE UP BY JUNE WOOOO (email me and remind me if it's not up by then ty)
TIPS
DRY TONGUE - I found that sour things helped to - so stock up on sour worms!
HARD TO DRINK WATER - my blood pressure was constantly low, like 95/57 LOW, and that was probs because I wasn't drinking enough water. IT IS HARD I KNOW, but it helps to get a gym junkie 2L bottle to keep track of the liquids! Also, soups and stuff count as liquid, so DRINK that soup.
VEGGIES DON'T TASTE GOOD - maybe veggies didn't taste good to begin with for you, BUT, you gotta get your vitamins right??? :'( - solution SORTA is to just to add more flavour to everything, like maggi sauce, vegemite, soy sauce, whatever it takes to get that FLAVAA
